THIS IS REALLY HORRIBLE!!!

cause & symptoms of starvation

anorexia nervosa, which is an eating disorder characterized by extreme calorie restriction

intentional fasting

coma

stroke

inability to obtain food (famine; child abuse; aftermath of war or other disaster; being lost in wilderness or desert areas)

severe gastrointestinal disease

Since the body will combat malnutrition by breaking down its own fat and eventually its own tissue, a whole host of symptoms can appear. The body's structure, as well as its functions, are affected. Starved adults may lose as much as 50% of their normal body weight.

About Starvation

Starvation is the result of a severe or total lack of nutrients needed for the maintenance of life.Adequate nutrition has two components, necessary nutrients and energy in the form of calories. It is possible to ingest enough energy without a well-balanced selection of individual nutrients and produce diseases that are noticeably different from those resulting from an overall insufficiency of nutrients and energy. Although all foods are a source of energy for the human body, it is possible to consume a seemingly adequate amount of food without getting the required minimum of energy (calories). For example, marasmus is the result of a diet that is deficient mainly in energy. Children who get enough calories, but not enough protein have kwashiorkor. This is typical in cultures with a limited variety of foods that eat mostly a single staple carbohydrate like maize or rice. These conditions overlap and are associated with multiple vitamin and mineral deficits, most of which have specific names and set of problems associated with them.

Marasmus produces a very skinny child with stunted growth.

Children with kwashiorkor have body fat, an enlarged liver, and edema-swelling from excess water in the tissues. They also have growth retardation.

Niacin deficiency produces pellagra characterized by diarrhea, skin rashes, brain dysfunction, tongue, mouth and vaginal irritation, and trouble swallowing.

Thiamine (Vitamin B1) deficiency causes beriberi, which can appear as heart failure and edema, a brain and nerve disease, or both.

Riboflavin deficiency causes a sore mouth and throat, a skin rash, and anemia.

Lack of vitamin C (ascorbic acid)-scurvy-causes hair damage, bleeding under the skin, in muscles and joints, gum disease, poor wound healing, and in severe cases convulsions, fever, loss of blood pressure, and death.

Vitamin B12 is needed to keep the nervous system working properly. It and pyridoxine (vitamin B6) are both necessary for blood formation.

Vitamin A deficiency causes at first loss of night vision and eventually blindness from destruction of the cornea, a disease called keratomalacia.

Vitamin K is necessary for blood clotting.

Vitamin D regulates calcium balance. Without it, children get rickets and adults get osteomalacia.

Causes and symptoms

unknown

In many parts of Africa, the production of food depends upon the intense manual labor of every family. When large areas of Africa are dislocated by war especially southern Sudan where a war of ethnic cleansing is being waged, or adults die from the scourge of AIDS, fields cannot be worked, and food cannot be produced. Many, especially women and children are forced to depend upon hand outs of food. Unpredictable weather can also aggravate the situation.

starvation in Africa

Experts warn that the current stocks located in the countries and already promised by donors will not prevent massive starvation. In all, an estimated 11 million people throughout southern Africa will need food aid to survive over the next six months. The latest harvest figures show that Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia and Lesotho - as feared - face the most desperate situation. Mozambique and Swaziland also face grave food shortages.
starvation

Anorexia is an eating disorder where people starve themselves. Anorexia usually begins in young people around the onset of puberty. Individuals suffering from anorexia have extreme weight loss. Weight loss is usually 15% below the person's normal body weight. People suffering from anorexia are very skinny but are convinced that they are overweight. Weight loss is obtained by many ways. Some of the common techniques used are excessive exercise, intake of laxatives and not eating. Anorexics have an intense fear of becoming fat. Their dieting habits develop from this fear. Anorexia mainly affects adolescent girls.
People with anorexia continue to think they are overweight even after they become extremely thin, are very ill or near death. Often they will develop strange eating habits such as refusing to eat in front of other people. Sometimes the individuals will prepare big meals for others while refusing to eat any of it.
The disorder is thought to be most common among people of higher socioeconomic classes and people involved in activities where thinness is especially looked upon, such as dancing, theater, and distance running.

2 girls found starving

WICHITA, Kan. - Two emaciated girls who told police they ate only when their father wasn’t traveling on business were hospitalized after police found them in an advanced state of starvation.
“It’s the worst case of malnutrition I’ve ever seen,” said police Lt. E.J. Bastian. The 6- and 7-year-old girls were found Friday in a home’s basement, were they were kept.
The girls’ stepmother, whose biological children were found healthy and well-fed upstairs, was taken in for questioning. Their father, traveling on business, was to be questioned when he returned, police said.State social workers discovered the girls after receiving a tip and checking on their welfare. They then called police.
The two girls told police they ate whenever their father was home, which wasn’t a lot. With the father gone this week and next week, “they were really hoping they could eat this weekend,” Bastian said.
Healthy stepsiblings
The house had plenty of food, and the stepsiblings, a 4-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy, were well cared for, Bastian said. They have been placed in protective custody, where the emaciated girls also will go once they leave the hospital.
A doctor told police it didn’t appear the girls had eaten in six days or had anything to drink in three days, despite recent temperatures above 100 degrees.
But it was obvious the girls had been starved for much longer than that, he said.
“This isn’t a six-day starvation,” Bastian quoted a doctor as telling a police officer. “Obviously, these kids have been starved for quite a while.”

starvation

i believe that starvation in this world is mostly occuring in Africa. Based on research, more than one billion people do not have enough food or clean water to provide for there basic needs. As a result more than 2,500 children and adults are dying each day. When people are so thristy, they take risk by consuming water that are not healthy.
